It can be a joyful experience to learn guitar playing. As there are people involved in the process it is not surprising that there are different ways to practice! However, the common factor is that practicing should be a pleasant experience.
When you pick up a guitar for the first time you might wonder if it is possible to master this instrument. Well, the process of learning to play guitar can be as joyful as the destination!
- Learning guitar must be a positive experience
When you play guitar for an audience or a friend you will convey not only the notes you play but also how you feel about your playing. By practicing in a manner that is positive you will program yourself with feelings associated with the piece you play.
When you perform you will probably play the piece of music with the same attitude you had when you practiced the music. Therefore it is important to learn to play a piece of music in the same mood in which you want to perform it.
Always try to play in a relaxed way. This is accomplished by never practicing a piece of music faster than you are able to master it and by always playing with correct posture of your hands and the rest of your body.
- Play to your mirror
It can be a good idea to every now and then play in front of a mirror. Look at your hands as you play. Are you playing in an economic way, with hand and fingers moving just as much as they need to?
Do you have a relaxed face, do you look angry or tense! Are you smiling if that is appropriate? It might feel odd to look at your hands in this reversed way but I know that you will get used to it very soon.
- Play for people
It is important to practice in your solitude. When you are alone you can repeat a passage as many times as you want without having to consider other peoples feelings. You can spot difficulties in your music and play these passages until you have mastered them.
But it is also important as part of your practicing schedule to perform. The public can be one person or an occasion with many people listening. By having the aim to eventually play a piece of music to other people you will practice in a meaningful way and you will also have the energy and motivation to learn your melodies better. You will also be more aware of the musical part of guitar playing and of conveying your feelings with the help of music.
- Learn to perform as part of your practice
Some people only practice but never actually play a piece of music from start to end in “performance mode”. That means to practice as if you had a group of people in front of you listening. This is an important step, to actually continue playing even if you miss a note or two.
When you learn to play in “performance mode” you will be more prepared to play in front of people as you can deal with mistakes without embarrassment.
- Easy pieces are okay
It is easy to become overwhelmed thinking about how much practicing time will be involved in learning some of the tricks of your guitar heroes but it is also a comfort to know that you can convey something worthwhile to your friends by playing easy pieces with your heart involved.
Practicing guitar should be a joyful experience, otherwise it will not be a joyful experience listening to you performing. Practice with a smile, perform with love and give yourself the pleasure of knowing that you can make people happy by your playing!
